Engineering Explained, the youtube channel dedicated to giving people an understanding of how their cars work, has taken on the 2014 Corvette Stingray. All is well until he gets to the engine. What do you think of his assessment?

That headline hurts my word parts. What?

"My car, a 99 acura integra"

and there goes all credibility to this video, goodbye

"I don't get why we're still going with the pushrod, 2 valves per cylinder".

Because it's a f*cking Corvette, you halfwit. What, is his next video going to be on the 911 where he wonders why Porsche engineers haven't put the engine in the middle?

*Porsh-uh, you Philistine.

"Yeah, it's going to be a decent engine." Really? It's the most technologically advanced and impressive American engine to come along in 40 years, I'd say it's going to be a wee bit better than 'decent'.

"Not even 100 horsepower per liter." I can count on one hand the number of high-volume production cars that have a specific output of 100hp per liter.

Lol Integra. My SVT Focus has 85hp/L, but I'm not going to compare it to a Corvette because I'm not an idiot.

I honestly don't see how he, knowing what he knows about cars from his other videos, could have said all that with a straight face. Even is he is just a script reader that got his car guy credentials from Autozone and his passion from FnF movies, it doesn't explain how that BS got in this video.

I'm with you. I've seen a few other of his videos and he definitely knows what he's talking about, which is what makes this vid all the more confusing. He should be impressed by the LT1, which also has a dry-sump oil system and reduces emissions by 30% compared to the LS3 (which he didn't mention), but instead he shits on it because it's a pushrod, completing forgetting how much of a technical achievement it is to have a pushrod engine with VVT. I'd love to guess at his motivation for saying such stupid things, but I genuinely have no idea what he could be thinking in this case.

According to his page he is a graduated mechanical engineer . All the more confusing. I would think an engineer would never use the hp/liter argument.

I'm actually in school to be a mechanical engineer, and it seems to me that hp/liter is a measure of efficiency (the more efficient a system, the more efficiently work is transferred through it, resulting in higher hp numbers), so it's not like it's an invalid argument, it's just interesting he focused on it as much as he did. I would be impressed with the 25hp/30lb-ft of torque increase if I was going to mention specific output at all. He didn't even get the numbers right, either, the LT1 makes 455 hp and 460ft-lb of torque. If I was this guy with an ME degree, I'd be stunned at the numbers and specs the Corvette engineers pulled with essentially a $50k per car budget, not comparing them to a freaking Integra.

The 455 / 460 is with the sport exhaust. Aren't there better ways to measure the efficiency of an engine than hp/liter? While 100 hp/l naturally aspirated is impressive, all the cars that do it have no low end torque, the Integra being one of them.

Thermodynamic efficiency is the main one, and fuel efficiency is another, but I have yet to take the Thermodynamics of Internal Combustion Engines at my school, so I don't really know much more. However, as you mentioned the lack of torque in Integras and the like, I believe (and take this all with a grain of salt) high horsepower cars like those have comparatively low torque figures because their engines have lower bore:stroke ratios, which essentially sacrifices torque for higher hp gains (bore=horsepower, stroke=torque). By comparison, a Corvette engine, say the LS3, is "oversquare", meaning it has a bore: stroke ratio greater than one, which results in nearly equal hp and torque figures (430hp and 424ft-lb of torque). One of the reasons American engines are considered "lazy" are because they are historically oversquare, which produces a lot of low-down torque, and one of the reasons VTEC engines rev to 9000+ is because of their long strokes. Maybe someone else who's more knowledgeable in these sorts of things could help us out, that's about all I got lol.

He lost huge amounts of credibility by mentioning HP/L. Perhaps we should mail him GhostZ's essay on true specific power.

I think you've got that reversed. Oversquare is when the bore is larger than the stroke, resulting in the high revving, low torque engines. Most American V8s are undersquare, where the stroke is larger than the bore. The long stroke give them their torque and is one of the things that prevents high RPMs and the hp figure that brings.

the viper uses pushrods and variable valve timing. no direct injection though.

All you haters are ignorant, typical stupid f*cks that like American cars but know nothing about it engineering, its always about your ford pickup truck or jeep lol. Don't get me wrong, I like Vipers, and in my own opinion, it has improved A LOT, but sorry, they're still using a 8.4L V10 engine. They need 8.4L to achieve the same performance figures that some other brands can achieve with smaller displacement engines, THAT is engineering. He is referring to Porsche a lot is because frankly, Porsche's engineers came up with technologies way ahead of others. In 1900, Ferdinand Porsche already came up with the first electric hybrid vehicle, viper and vette didnt even exist then.

In the video he clearly stated that he likes the 2014 vette, hes not bashing it, he has his freedom of speech and he has the right to state his own opinion. And I can see where the complaints about the engine is coming from. It's true that all these technologies that these american supercars "claimed" to be new and innovative but let's face it, we all know they have been around for a long time. Even family sized cars are using 4 valves and overhead cam because it is more efficient and has more advantage. Reason the vette uses pushrod is because its not as pricey, thats why its so much cheaper compare to italian and german cars. And I'm not biased towards Jap cars either but Japanese Engineers can create something that is better than what american car makers achieve.

And yeah tyler, you can suck your svt focus' d*ck lol, its fkn 21st century, even viper made a big leap, who cares if its a corvette, you can still do all these amazing things with the V8s using new technologies. and yeah its the most technologically advanced and impressive AMERICAN engine to come along in 40 years. But only in america lol, because you people are so conceited and think that this is such an impressive achievement, its not. Look around europe, they didn't have that great engineering reputation from nothing.

I could go on and on and on on this topic with you guys but I ain't gunna waste anymore time, I just couldn't stand the fact that you guys are talking sh*t about him because of these tiny little things. My point is, before all you people waste your time and hate on this guy, maybe you should learn more about cars and engineering before you do so. He was just stating his own opinion. And hey even if he made a mistake, so what? LOL you all go hating on him cause he made a comment about hp/L, or some other stupid tiny mistakes ? Do you not make mistakes? (If you dont, wow im seriously, seriously impressed.) And they aren't even the point of this video? Come on guys, like grow up already.

Excuse for my rudeness but hey, this guy hasnt done anything to any of you either yet you all are bashing him, so I guess it's fair. Peace.
